Lecture Series "What is Data Science?"
| 15. November 2018On November 9th the second talk of the lecture series "What is data science?" took place at the University of Vienna. Guest speaker Andrew Gelman, statistician at Columbia University, gave a talk about "Bayesian workflow".
Following David Donohos talk "Data Science: The end of theory?" in June 2018 the audiences took great interest in the second part of the lecture series featuring Andrew Gelman from Columbia University.
Jean Robert Tyran, Vice Rector for Research and International Affairs at the University of Vienna, gave the introduction.
Torsten Möller, speaker of the platform "Data Science @ Uni Vienna", gave an insight into the development of the platform, introducing the new Data Science PhD students and looking back on the Data Science Summer School in September.
Hannes Leeb from the Department of Statistics introduced speaker Andrew Gelman, professor of statistics and political science at Columbia University.
In his talk Andrew Gelman focused on methods in statistics and data science and how to make appropriate inferences from real-world data analysis.
He underpinned his point by a practical problem: Do Halloween and Valentine's Day influence when expecting mothers give birth?
Data may indicate so, but not every type of visualization might prove good or useful.
Different graphs may show different answers: New Year, Independence Day, and Christmas tend to be less popular than Halloween, Valentine’s Day shows a small peek.
